Another 'Recycle & Repurpose' Project!

We enjoyed a quiet Christmas at home and when things slow down, my heart wants to sew, so I started recycling and repurposing this flannel robe.

It, along with another one, was given to me by a dear friend who had purchased them new but, they just didn't work for her.  Thank you, my dear, dear friend ... you know who you are!

For a robe, it would not work for me either, but I immediately knew what I could do with it ...

I set to work by cutting off the bodice part and laying it aside.  If you'll notice in the first picture, the robe is closed via snaps all the way down.  I didn't want to have to deal with snaps coming unsnapped on a skirt, so I removed the snap placket and sewed the opening up using a French seam being careful to match the plaids.

Next, I folded down 1/4 inch at the top and pressed it down.  Then I measured down 1 1/2 inches (I used 1-inch-wide elastic), folded and pressed again.  I stitched all the way around approximately 1/8 from the top of the fold.  Next, I went to the bottom of the fold and again stitched 1/8 inch all the way around leaving a 2-inch opening to put the elastic through.  I inserted the elastic and stitched closed the opening. The skirt was completed.

Here's how I styled it ...

I knew I wanted to accent the really small white lines in the fabric of the skirt and the pockets, so I went to my closet and pulled out the white slip I made from a thrifted sheet.  I tried them together and viola ... I liked the way they paired together.  My vision was to use a white sweater for the top that was short enough not to cover the pockets, but I didn't have a white sweater at all.  I looked at some other options, but nothing really felt right.  I decided to just 'sit on it for a day or two' and think about it.

Fast forward a couple of days and my hubby got a phone call from a friend who had a friend who knew my hubby, but didn't have his phone number. He had several bags of men's clothing he wanted to get rid of and thought of my husband, did he want them?  Hubby went to get them and when he got home, I immediately started going through all 9 bags!  (I am on a mission to declutter my home and the last thing I wanted was to have 9 really big bags of clothing sitting around.)  I pulled each item out of each bag and hubby, and I made a decision about whether to keep it, recycle it, or donate it.  When we were finished, we had a small pile to keep and bagged the rest to be donated.  (I'm happy to report that that has already been done!)  Long story short, in the 'keep pile' was the white sweater you see in the picture above.  It was perfect ... shhhh!  I won't tell anyone it's a man's sweater if you won't!!!

Blogmas 2024: Days, 19, 20 and 21

 Let's play catch-up ... it's been a really busy 3 days!

Teens can be hard to come up with an affordable gift for that you would feel good about giving and that they would like to receive ... especially when you have multiples.

Such was my dilemma with the teen Bible class that I teach at the church where we attend.  I wanted to gift them with something they would be excited to receive so I came up with what you see above ... food (as in candy) and a small amount of money!

I didn't want to just hand them the candy and money, I wanted to make it festive and something they would remember!

I emptied water bottles (no one drank from the bottles), removed the brand wrapper and made a slit about 1 - 2 inches long vertically where the wrapper had been.  I carefully stuffed the dried-out bottles through the slit with shredded paper, candy and rolled up $1 bills and then some more shredded paper.  I made new 'labels' out of snowflake scrapbooking paper and attached them over the slit where the old label had been.

When I gave them to the teens, I told them I wanted to see who could get the contents out first.  The only restriction was that they could not cut the bottle in any way.  The guys were bragging about how quickly they would have theirs open.  When I said 'go' the girls took a minute to look at the bottle and strategize.  The guys instantly began twisting the bottles and pulling and tugging on them.  That didn't work so they tried other 'macho' type things.  I laughed so hard, that little bottle had them stumped and they couldn't figure out how to get its contents out.  Not willing to admit defeat they sneaked a peek at the girls and ... the girls had the contents of their bottles lying on the table and were watching the guys!  It really was priceless!  Yes, the guys did eventually figure it out and we all had several good laughs.  I think this will be a Christmas gift they will remember for years to come ... not because of what was in it, but because of the Christmas memories we made and enjoyed because of it!

I made a peach cobbler for a food gift ... (gifts don't have to be expensive to be enjoyed) ...

We've put together close to 100 fudge cups (we made the fudge one day and started packaging it up for delivery the next).  When we averaged out the expense of making the fudge, the cups, parchment paper, bags and ribbons, each fudge cup gift came to about $1 each.  It's a lot of work, but very cost effective and a gift that everyone wants.

As you can see, we've been very busy cooking, creating and making small inexpensive gifts for our church family, friends and neighbors.

That's all for Blogmas days 19, 20 and 21 ...  I'll meet you back here tomorrow for day 22 of Blogmas 2024!

Blogmas 2024: 12/18

I teach a teenage Bible class at the church where we attend on Wednesday nights, and tonight was gifted these adorably cute earrings by 2 of the students ...

They are so me, and I love them!

Tonight, hubby took me on a drive through the downtown area of the nearest to us town to look at the Christmas lights.   We enjoyed them so much and when we came to the display of the 12 days of Christmas, we sang the song all the way through each time we came to one of the days!  We were out of breath by the time we got all the way through the song, but we enjoyed ourselves immensely!

We're winding down on all the Christmas preps at our house.  We are done except for hubby making his yearly fudge that we package up and gift to friends and neighbors.

It's been a good holiday season, and we have and continue to enjoy the journey.  I hope you are as well!

Blogmas 2024: 12/16 & 17

Yesterday was an overfilled day!  You know the kind of day where your to-do list is long and everything on it HAS to get done that day?  I finally completed the last thing on my list that had to be done at around 10:30 p.m. and promptly fell into bed exhausted!

Today, after a morning Bible class with a friend online, hubby asked if I wanted to go on an outing.  Feeling like I could really use a break from my 'to-do' list I said, 'sure!'

First stop was at a Mercantile Mall type store where there were individual booths of handcrafted goodies.  I picked up these earrings to look at, he saw me and asked if I liked them.  I said yes, and he said, 'get them!'  He used his personal money and bought them for me!

Next, he took me to a somewhat local real-life vineyard that does a 3 1/2-mile drive through light show every year during the holidays.  They also have a restaurant on site, and he took me out to eat there while we waited for it to get dark enough for the light show to begin!

For 3 1/2-miles we drove through the vineyard turned light show, with our lights off (everyone had to turn their vehicle lights off), looking at scene after scene of Christmas lights.  It was just beautiful!

It was just the kind of day I needed after having a day like I had yesterday!
My husband is amazing and I'm so thankful that we've put the work into our marriage to make it what it is today.  He knows when I need a change of scenery!

Blogmas 2024: 12/15

Today, I delivered our Christmas cards for everyone at the Church we attend.

We received more Christmas cards as well!

Grandma Claus, for the little ones at Church, ended today as well and she 'went back to the North Pole' until next year.

All this happened around two good sermons/lessons ... (1) on Joshua 24:15 ... as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord and (2) "Tuit' and Stick Tuit."  Both lessons had to do with choices we make and filled our spiritual tanks for another week.

Blogmas 2024: 12/14

Today was such a nice quiet day at home ... I got to stay home all day long!!!!

(This ornament makes me smile and it makes me sad.  It reminds me of my mama and the Charlie Brown like Christmas tree that she would put up every year.  We all gave her such a hard time about it that she traded it in for one that wasn't quite so forlorn looking.  Now that's she's gone, it's a reminder of the good times we had with her and her tree and at the same time it makes me sad that she's no longer with us.)

I started the morning watching a Christmas movie.  It was one of those Hallmark Christmas kind of movies (that wasn't on the Hallmark channel) that I don't usually watch.  Hubby doesn't care for them, and since we watch TV together, I don't insist.  He is so good to me in so many ways this is a small thing I can do for him.  Anyway, I was already into it when he got up (the movie was on really, really early) so he busied himself doing other things until it was over.  After 44 years of marriage, I still think he's a keeper!

After the movie, I worked on this week's Grandma Claus's treat for the little ones at church.

Finished our Christmas cards to be mailed and got them in the mail.

Finished our Christmas cards that we hand deliver at church.

Updated my Christmas notebook with all the things we've done and are doing this holiday season, right down to the quote I wrote in our Christmas cards.  I like to find a good quote; hand write it in the card and then add any personal notes.

My Christmas notebook is my secret weapon on pulling off a successful holiday season!

It was a steady busy day filled with lots of Christmasy things!!!

Just the kind of day I like this time of the year!

Blogmas 2024: 12/12

We had an early afternoon 'Christmas' luncheon with some friends today and I wore my Rudolph sweatshirt and Rudolph and Clariece earrings ...

Can you spot the earrings?  I got several compliments on the sweatshirt and earrings.

The earrings were gifted to me by a friend and the sweatshirt was picked out and purchased for me by my hubby!  He did good!

It was such a nice outing and afterwards hubby and I did a little shopping as we were near a larger city!  We were both more than ready to come home after just a brief time though, and we both agreed that shopping this time of the year is just not our cup of tea!

This sight greeted us as we neared home ... a snowflake lined street.  It's kind of funny; this is about as close to snow as our area gets, so I'm going to soak up its beauty every time we're in the area!

Blogmas 2024: 12/11

Today, my post is about 'Christmas attire!'

I've collected several pieces over the years and delight in bringing them out each year and seeing the different looks I can create with what I have.  I also add to my collection if I find a good deal!  Here's an outfit I wore today ...

The jogging pants/sweatpants were a clearance find several years ago.  The sweatshirt is new for this year as are the earrings (I paid half price for them) and the socks (again, half price).  The gray bracelet is one I've had for several years and the 'Christmas beaded bracelet is one I put together this year from wooden beads.

This is a very comfortable and festive outfit to be out and about in ... and let me emphasize that comfort is very important to me!

I will get several years of use from each of these pieces and lots of pleasure wearing them!

Do you like wearing Christmas attire?

Blogmas 2024: 12/6 and 12/7

Look at these super cute 'Rudolph and Clarice' earrings!  I am thrilled to say that they were gifted to me this week and I love them!!!

Friday and today have been a whirlwind of activities!

I attended our ladies Christmas party at church on Friday night!  We all had a ball!

And on Saturday afternoon we had our church's Christmas party for the children.  It was hard to tell who had more fun, the kids or adults!  Adults, you know children really like it when we take time to play games with them, watch movies with them and just spend time with them without being distracted by other things.  It's in those moments that some of the best bonding happens!  (Pssst!  I wore the above-mentioned earrings to this children's Christmas party tonight!!!)

I received my second Christmas card in the mail today and it had a packet of a Christmas blend tea in it with the invite of 'Let's have a cup of Christmas tea!'  How neat is that!  I thought that was such a great way to up the anty on Christmas Cards!!!  I loved it and you can bet I'm going to be enjoying that cup of tea with the sender in mind, giving thanks to God for the hearts of those who look for ways to do a little extra!  One never knows when these small little things just might be the thing a person needs at just the moment they receive it.  You know God moves in mysterious ways, so if you are prompted to do a little extra for someone, go ahead and do it.  God may be using you to brighten someone else's day!  Thank you, Paula, you brightened my day today!

I hope you are enjoying your journey to Christmas as much as we are!

Blogmas 2024: 12/5

We received our first Christmas card in the mail today!  There's just something about receiving Christmas cards via the mail that makes my heart glad ... it reminds me of the old-fashioned Christmas' that I remember from my childhood.

(Christmas card not shown.)

When I was a child, mail delivery was a very special time ... Christmas cards, the Sears & Roebuck Christmas catalog - oh my what a treat to sit and look through and dream, and the Montgomery Ward Christmas catalog was smaller, but none the less was a pretty big event at our house as well.

We rarely got to order anything out of either catalog, but we sure could dream big; it was like getting a gift when they arrived in the mail.  Of course, then came the task of deciding who got to look at them first!!!  All of us kids wanted to be first!  There may or may not have been a tussle or two in deciding the lucky recipient!  Sharing only worked for so long as one or the other of the sharers would almost always think they were being slighted in not being able to look at each page as long as they wanted, and an argument would begin ... and both sharers would lose the privilege of looking at the catalogs!

Such sweet and precious memories from my childhood ... sadly, there are no more Sears & Roebuck or Montgomery Ward Christmas catalogs to look forward to however, those 'in the mail' Christmas Cards are still looked forward too and thought of as something pretty special at my house!

I hope you've enjoyed this little trip down memory lane with me today ... you can blame it on us getting our first Christmas card of 2024!

Sometimes, it's the littlest things that trigger the sweetest memories!

I hope you are enjoying your journey to Christmas as much as we are!

Blogmas 2024: 12/4

I just couldn't resist sharing this cute little gingerbread ornament.  He's not hanging on our Christmas tree, instead I tucked him in among the branches making him look as if it was his natural habitat!  I often do that with 'ornaments!'

On Monday, we hung stockings and yesterday socks ... that's not all we've hung ... how about this Christmas quilt ...

I love how this quilt drapes so perfectly as it hangs through this grapevine wreath.  It just adds such a nice touch to the door when it's closed ... which is most of the time right now with the really cold temps we're having!

I made this quilt about 3 years ago; I love the festiveness of it!  Who doesn't like Santa hats!!

One more thing before we close out today's entry ... the hunt continues for the missing Christmas aprons!

The hunt for my missing Christmas aprons continued today and once again I didn't find them!

However, I did put this arrangement together ...

those little spools were fun to make!

And hung these socks!

Little touches here and there that make our home holiday festive!
